September 2004 - Sensei Maccarrone comments on the fourth Doshi kai :

Karate USA Dojo hosted the latest Doshi kai with instruction on kihon basic by Hanshi Ferrara with warmups recommended by Ueshiro Sensei. Yamani Bo and Tuifa kata was taught and reviewed with some application methods by Sensei Maccarrone to apply "osai" and "kazushi" to counter.

Yakusoku Kumite practice included control and takedown application "kote gaiashi" and principle to escapes by direction/force methods, also control of centerline to make application points useful without extra power. Formal kata was practiced with bunkai movements noted in previous applications. Nahanchi kata and "arch theory" was practiced together with ubuki breathing to extend ki (chi) and develop "iron shirt" protections.

Explanations of advanced three nahanchi practice was recommended to develop strength in ALL kata especially stances and proper posture. Eye and looking methods were shown as key to kata changes in directions. Several new members were accepted into US Shorin Ryu. Hanshi Ferrara was very pleased with the workout and the contributions by all that attended.

May 2004 - Sensei Ferrara comments on third doshi kai.

First, I would like to congratulate Jeff Brooks on his promotion to 7th Dan.  We were all very happy to have Jeff as a member of the U.S. Shorin Ryu Karate Association.  We know that he is eager to learn what we have to share with him and equally to share with us what knowledge he has acquired through his years of training.  We learned a lot from his demonstration of Naihanchi and how the stance forms a roman arch on which the energy flows.

Sal Manardi introduced push hands, which we will be incorporating into our training.

Mr. Chris Lee brought samples of makiawara’s to show us.  He will custom make them for anyone interested.  I purchased one of the samples for my yard.  Anyone interested should get in touch with Sensei Maccarone.

It was a small group, this time, but a very strong work out and a lot of knowledge was shared.  The energy level was very high.
