I learned this kata in the Scaglione dojo in 1979. I practiced it until 1991 when I met Master Ken Ruiz, my teacher. He said that the kata did not make any sense in terms of foot work, and angles. I think he stopped doing it for personel reasons when he left Ansei. I started doing the kata again when I attended the first US Shorin Ryu Doshikai. I now teach it to my students as part of the curriculum. It is a great kata to practice hard. Doing several full speed and power repititions will make the most fit students tired. It's a nice training tool. If you break down the kata you can make sense of the fighting techniques. It's like any other kata, it's all how you look at the techniques that makes your interpretation of the bunkai. Since I don't believe in standardized bunkai, we all can find something different in the techniques. As long as you can use them practacally, that's all that matters. The kata is similar to Ananku, and maybe not necessary if you practice Ananku. Then again, maybe Ananku is not necessary if you practice Fukyugata San. Anyway, I feel that there are way too many katas. I favor a system with one basic, one intermediate, and one advanced kata. One you learn enough of the kata, you can pick a few that most resemble your fight style and do those. I have forgotten a few of the katas. I had no desire to practice them when I learned them. Too many techniques, not enough time in this life to practice them all.
