Before the 1960's only a few people in this country were familiar with Karate-Do. In 1962 Ansei Ueshiro came to this country specifically to bring the secret art to America. It is due to his unceasing devotion to Shorin-ryu that all of us are able to make our contribution. Shorin-ryu Karate-Do is founded on the system of ideas of Ankichi Arakaki, uncle of Ansei Ueshiro. Arakaki more than anyone influenced Shoshin Nagamine, who as we all know is the founder of Matsubayashi-ryu. Ansei Ueshiro was a member of the warrior class of Okinawa by birth. His first Sensei was his father. His phenominal physical strenght as well as his perseverence and devotion to his family martial art and fine mental character gained him recognition by the venerated masters of his time. Among its members were Taba Sensei, Kina Sensei and Shima Sensei. Ansei Ueshiro immersed himself in the warrior traditionall for all of his life. On May 7, 2002 Ansei Ueshiro passed away after suffering a stroke. We are forever indepted to Ansei Ueshiro for the extraordinary gift of Shorin-ryu Karate-Do that he brought to us from his homeland of Okinawa. I will continue to express my respect for this gift through the Shorin-ryu tradition of always moving forward.
