"I find myself having to research the titled rankings like Renshi, Kyoshi, Hanshi, Shihan etc. often used in place of their name or a title before their name much like Dr. or something." It is only recently that these titles have been used as they are today. And by that, I mean incorrectly. There were Renshi, Kyoshi and Hanshi titles, but they were NEVER used in speaking to or about someone like you would say Dr. Smith. The only thing people were called was Sensei. The other titles were merely levels of teaching used primarily in written form. By the way, Shihan wass not a separate title until recently either. Renshi, Kyoshi and Hanshi are all classified as a whole as Shihan titles. It is unfortunate that ego has become more important to some than skill, knowledge and respect. As far as rank goes, I think it is a good thing in moderation. Enough rank to gauge progress for adults and more for kids to keep them motivated. Just my opinion.
