The gift comment is a representation of teaching ie: "sensei" or " one who has gone before" The Three represents the condition called "Shihan-Te" meaning teacher to student making student the teacher as into the passing on of experience/skill properly ...also the concept of doing correct "kata" that will survive the student/teacher to reach another generation. Learning from the teacher includes avoiding their mistakes and not creating newer ones. Here too, titles do not denote mastery but only a sequence and description of one's achievement. "sensei" has importance only to the student that uses it and describes all the above. Such use also is "Ouss" acknowledgement of one of a kind.. more or less a Japanese adaptation. Most Okinawan do refrain from its use. Simply by using "hai" (yes). { Ansei Ueshiro's favorite was 'ahsoo desuka' (and so it is ) and for something of importance he would comment "hanto-neh" ( yes, its true). Most of the time his reaction was pure silence. Something he observed...americans could not master. Thank You all Terry Maccarrone Karate USA Dojo
