I always understood it to be a military greeting used in Japan. Just like we Marines use Ohhraaa! I thought it was added in Japan as they militarized karate practice. I don't think it is Okinawan, but Hanshi Maccarrone would be the best person to explain its meaning. I do not use it in my dojo, however if I am greeted with it by a fellow martial artist I will return the OSU.
