I definitely agree Maccarrone Sensei. However, I guess you would agree that back then the training was good. Was it good simply because people trained hard, or was it because the one directing the training had a clear intellectual understanding of the training he was instructing his students in. Eventually the student must digest the material intellectually to progress to the next level. I think the need for non okinawans to do this comes from the inherent communication barrier between the okinawans and americans. It is hard to understand something completely when it is being taught by someone who does not understand your language and culture and vice versa. In addition, not everyone learns the same way. Ultimately is whatever method helps one devleop effective karate is what really matters. I personally like a combination of hard physical training and intellectual training. Just like Nagamine's style is a moderate one with natural logical fighting techs and principles, so the training should be as well. Just my two cents. Marcel Dulaney
