Sensei Marcel makes some interesting observations. ....Yes at one time it was very difficult to understand due to cultural and language differences...However my experiences with Okinawan sensei always had a clear meaning in their explanations, but often limited them in class work. After the training sessions were the fruitful discussion, done mostly in Q&A formats. Perhaps I was most fortunate as the Okinawan direct influence guided me especially from Takayoshi Nagamine, Hanashiro, Kishaba, Heshiki, Omine and Ueshiro sensei' Also outside our system from Odo, Nakazato, Ozawa, Higashionna, Toguchi, and especially Taika Oyata. Still, I believe its all about hard work, sweat and tears. When I was young my briar-patch was the dojo..I loved it, to train for hours at a time. Today..I just don't see that in karate-ka. Orginally class was three to five hours long and you could never wear the same gi twice... Some night we did kata 300 times.. We have the discussion group to ask questions and share opinions..and I have lots of them. Please don't accept them as fact...only as a starting point for your own investigations and conclusions. US Shorinryu Association is doing its best to offer ALL an equal start..Karate is now as American as apple pie. Okinawa still is the homeland and a visit there means everything.
